I just got home from driving my kids to the other side of the county in Metro Atlanta traffic for their homeschool elective classes. Their day starts at 8am and ends between 5 and 7 pm depending on Drama Club calls.
On the way home I called my husband who was also driving and we spent about 40 minutes complaining about our kids. (Sorry Oprah, but the talking while driving conversation was much needed.)
Anyway, I called him to complain that while our daughter knew that our washing machine needs repair and leaves the clothes too wet, she still didn't wash her required black t-shirt and matching jeans until oh.... 10:30 at night... and then tried to dry them this morning. It didn't work. She had to improvise.
So then we went into a tag-team rampage on all of the stuff they do in spite of our best efforts. Sorry kids, but there were some great one liners that I, as a homeschool blogger must share for the greater good. People need to know they are not alone.
My daughter says "but mom, I did everything you said and my clothes still weren't dry for this morning", I reply, "Yeah, but you did it five hours later... that would have made all of the difference in the world".
My husband says, " and what about the boy's attitude? You ask him a question and he gets all bent out of shape... all I said was Good Morning. How are you doing?"
"And what about her crazy clothes" my husband says. "I spend a fortune buying her all of the best things I can find, and she comes out of her room looking like Cindy Lauper".
They just don't think, I said. "The boy was standing over me fanning himself yesterday, asking me to turn on the air conditioner. I looked up at him and said, try unzipping your vest. It's down (feather filled). It's made for skiing." He unzips the vest. I ask him if he feels better. He replies "Yes"... with an attitude.
Oh, and let's not leave out lazy schoolwork. I asked a question and should have gotten back a paper that explained what they learned on DNA. My daughter gives me back a rhetorical essay.
Now let's not get it twisted. We both agree that they are magnificent kids. We have nieces and nephews and know that the attitudes could be a lot worse. I think the hardest thing to swallow is that as homeschoolers, we can't blame our kids issues on anyone else. We have to take responsibility for it all... The good, the bad, and the ugly.
